Bisače Island, Korcula – Remote Islet with a Seagull Colony
Bisače is the furthest islet in the Korcula archipelago from the mainland shore — positioned directly opposite Cape Raznjić at the eastern tip of Korcula, about four nautical miles from Korcula Town. It is the wildest and most remote of the Skoji group: rocky, exposed, uninhabited and home to one of the largest seagull colonies in the southern Dalmatian archipelago. A single pine tree provides the only shade on the island. Most visitors to Korcula never get near it. For those who do — by private boat or on a longer kayaking day — Bisace is genuinely unlike anything else in the archipelago.
The Seagull Colony
Bisace is densely populated by seabirds — primarily yellow-legged gulls, which nest here in large numbers alongside other species. The nesting ledges are visible from the water, packed into the rocky southern tip of the island where the colony concentrates. In breeding season, the noise and activity of several hundred nesting pairs are considerable — a dramatic natural spectacle in an otherwise quiet part of the archipelago.
A practical warning: seagulls are protective of their nests and will dive at anyone who approaches too closely during breeding season, roughly April to July. Keep a respectful distance from the southern tip — some individuals will strike. Watching from the water without landing near the colony is the right approach.

Swimming and the Island
Away from the nesting area, the island offers rocky swimming with the water clarity typical of the outer archipelago — deep, transparent and very blue due to the exposed position and stronger water movement. The single pine tree is at the northern end of the island and provides the only shade — limited but welcome on a hot day. The rocky shoreline requires water shoes and care when entering and exiting the sea.
The view from Bisace is the most open in the archipelago — you are at the eastern edge of the Skoji group looking out across open Adriatic towards the Raznjic, Peljesac and Mljet island.
Getting to Bisace
No water taxi serves Bisace. The distance from Korcula Town – about four nautical miles — makes it beyond practical kayaking range for most paddlers unless conditions are exceptionally calm and experience is solid. By private or hired motorboat, it is a straightforward run in calm weather. The most natural approach combines a stop at Bisace with visiting the nearby Cape Raznjić and Lenga coastline — arriving from the sea gives a perspective on the eastern tip of Korcula that the coastal path cannot match.
Do not attempt to reach Bisace in strong wind or deteriorating conditions — its exposed position in the outer channel makes it one of the more dangerous destinations in the archipelago in bad weather. The sea around the island changes character quickly when wind picks up.
