Gršćica Bay, Korcula – Sheltered South Coast Bay with Diving and Island Views

Gršćica is a small bay on the south coast of Korcula, between Prižba to the east and the wider Vela Luka area to the west. It is one of the most consistently described as beautiful bays on the south coast by people who have visited it – a compact, sheltered inlet surrounded by houses and lush Mediterranean vegetation, with clear water, a diving centre, one good restaurant, and several small islets just offshore. The shore is rocky and concrete rather than pebble or sand, which puts some visitors off and keeps the bay quieter than it would otherwise be. For those who don’t need a sand or pebble beach, Gršćica is one of the better places to spend a day on the south coast.

The Bay

The bay is compact and well-sheltered – the surrounding hills and the orientation of the inlet protect it from almost all wind directions, which makes it one of the calmer spots on the south coast in variable weather and a good anchorage for small boats. The water is clear with good visibility – the same quality typical of this undeveloped stretch of south coast. The underwater topography around the bay and the nearby islets is good for snorkelling and diving.

The shore is rocky with concrete platforms and steps built by the holiday homeowners along the waterfront – flat, accessible and with direct entry into the sea. As with all such platforms on the Croatian coast, they are legally accessible to all visitors regardless of which house they are adjacent to. The combination of rocky shore and clear water makes Gršćica a better destination for serious swimmers and snorkellers than for those wanting to lie on a beach – the absence of a pebble or sandy beach is the honest limiting factor.

Several small islets sit just offshore, visible from the bay and reachable by hired boat. The combination of the enclosed bay, the islets and the surrounding vegetation gives Gršćica an atmosphere that several visitors describe as one of their favourite places on the island – the kind of bay that makes you want to stay longer than you planned.

Diving at Gršćica

A diving centre operates at Gršćica – one of the few on the south coast outside Priscapac in Prižba. The bay’s sheltered position and the surrounding underwater topography make it a good base for exploring dive sites along this stretch of coast. The diving around the Gršćica islets and the south coast generally offers walls, reefs and caves – the limestone karst topography of the Adriatic produces interesting underwater formations throughout. The centre runs courses and guided dives for all experience levels. Check the current operator locally as diving centre arrangements change from season to season.

Eating and Facilities

One restaurant serves Gršćica – traditional Dalmatian food, fish, local wine. The small number of restaurants is part of what keeps the bay quiet and is a positive rather than a negative for visitors who want somewhere away from the tourist strip atmosphere of the larger resorts. Basic supplies can be found in Prižba, about 2-3 kilometres east.

Accommodation is available in private apartments and holiday houses in and around the bay. The settlement is small – Gršćica is a hamlet rather than a village – but has enough to sustain a week’s stay for visitors who want a quiet base on the south coast with easy access to Prižba, Brna and Vela Luka by car or boat.

Getting to Gršćica

By car from Korcula Town, the drive takes about 50-55 minutes – same route as Prižba, then continuing west along the coast road. From Prižba, the drive to Gršćica takes about 5 minutes. By boat, the bay is easily accessible from Prižba, Brna or Vela Luka. No public transport reaches Gršćica directly – a car or scooter is the practical option for a day visit. See map here.
