Zavalatica, Korcula – South Coast Harbour, Wine and Views to Lastovo

Zavalatica is a small fishing harbour and holiday village on the southern coast of Korcula, about 27 kilometres from Korcula Town and 2 kilometres south of the wine village of Cara in the hills above. A flat asphalted road runs from Cara through the vineyards of Čarsko Polje down to the bay – one of the more pleasant short drives on the island, passing through productive Pošip wine country with the sea appearing at the end of the road. Zavalatica has around 300 permanent inhabitants, a handful of restaurants, a small supermarket, apartments for rent and the kind of unhurried atmosphere that comes from being at the end of a road that most visitors never take.

One geographical detail worth knowing: if you were to travel by boat from Lumbarda at the eastern tip of Korcula westward along the south coast, Zavalatica would be the first village you encounter – after almost 20 kilometres of almost completely uninhabited shore. The stretch of coast between Lumbarda and Zavalatica, with its remote pebble coves and dramatic rocky scenery, is one of the most beautiful and least developed sections of coastline on any Croatian island.

History – A Port Built for Wine

Zavalatica’s existence is directly tied to the wine production of Cara above. The village was established as a working harbour specifically for the export of Pošip and other wines from the Čarsko Polje vineyards – barrels were carried down from the village on the hill to the bay for loading onto ships bound for ports across the Adriatic and Mediterranean. Before the era of motor vehicles and island roads, the sea was the only practical route for moving large quantities of wine off the island, and Zavalatica’s sheltered position on the south coast made it the natural loading point for Cara’s production.

The village today retains the character of a place built for practical purposes rather than tourism – stone houses around a small harbour, a working fishing port alongside the summer visitors, and a straightforward relationship with the sea and the vineyards behind it. In the 1970s and 1980s, as tourism developed along the Dalmatian coast, Cara residents began building summer houses and apartments in the bay, gradually transforming it into a modest holiday resort without losing its original character.

The Bay and the Sea

The bay at Zavalatica is sheltered – protected from the north and north-east winds by the hills of the island behind it – which makes it a reliable calm-water anchorage and a comfortable swimming location in most conditions. The south-facing aspect means it receives sun throughout the day and the water warms up well in summer. Stone jetties line the waterfront and are popular for swimming and sunbathing – flat, accessible and with direct entry into the sea.

The view from the bay is one of the most open on the island – you are looking directly south across the Adriatic towards Lastovo, which is visible on the horizon on clear days. The proximity to Lastovo – about 25 kilometres away – makes Zavalatica one of the more practical departure points on the south coast for a day trip to Lastovo Nature Park. The island is well worth the boat crossing: one of the least visited islands in Croatia, almost completely undeveloped, with distinctive architecture and extraordinary natural quiet.

Swimming – Zavalatica and Žitna

Swimming in Zavalatica itself is from the stone jetties along the waterfront – convenient and popular with families and older visitors for the easy, flat access. The water is clean and clear, with the good visibility typical of the south coast.

For a proper beach, Žitna bay is about 300 metres east of the village centre – a short walk along the coast. A pebble beach in a slightly more sheltered position than the main harbour area, with clear water and good snorkelling around the rocky edges of the bay. Žitna is quieter than Zavalatica itself and has its own small restaurant. The two locations together – Zavalatica for lunch and facilities, Žitna for swimming – make a natural combination for a day on this part of the coast.

Further along the coast towards Cara, the smaller cove of Čavica Luka is worth knowing about – a sheltered inlet accessible by boat or a short walk, less visited than either Zavalatica or Žitna and completely undeveloped. The bay where, according to local tradition, the English alabaster reliefs now displayed in the church of Gospa od Čarskog Polja were washed ashore in the 15th century.

Pošip Wine

The road between Zavalatica and Cara passes through the heart of Čarsko Polje – one of the two plains on Korcula responsible for Pošip wine. The cooperative wine cellar sits in the field on this road, open for tasting and sales. Eating fresh fish at one of the Zavalatica restaurants while drinking Pošip from the vineyards you drove through on the way down is one of the more straightforward pleasures this part of the island offers – the wine and the food come from the same few kilometres of Korcula and the combination shows it.

Sailing and Anchorage

Zavalatica is listed in all major Adriatic sailing guides as a reliable anchorage on the south coast – well protected from north and north-east winds, with good holding ground. For sailors cruising the south Dalmatian coast, it is a natural overnight stop between the eastern bays and Brna or Vela Luka further west. The bay is sheltered enough to be comfortable in most summer conditions, though the Siloko south-easterly reaches it directly and should be monitored. Basic provisions are available in the village supermarket.

Facilities

Zavalatica has a small supermarket, a cafe bar, a post office in nearby Cara and several restaurants serving traditional Dalmatian food – fresh fish, grilled meat, local wine. The restaurants sit directly on the waterfront with terraces overlooking the bay and the open sea beyond. The feeling of sitting with a large open expanse of the Adriatic in front of you – Lastovo on the horizon, no land between you and Italy – is one of the things visitors consistently mention about Zavalatica. It is a small village, but it has an outsized sense of space.

Accommodation is available in private apartments throughout the village. Cara, 2 kilometres up the hill, has a doctor’s surgery and additional services.

Getting to Zavalatica

By car from Korcula Town, the drive takes about 35 minutes – follow the main island road through Žrnovo and Pupnat, then turn south through Cara and down through the vineyards to the bay. By bus, the cross-island service stops in Cara – from there Zavalatica is 2 kilometres downhill, about 25 minutes on foot or a short taxi ride. No bus runs directly to the bay. A car or scooter makes Zavalatica considerably more accessible and allows you to combine visits to the winery, the church in Čarsko Polje and the neighbouring bays of Žitna and Čavica Luka in a single day.
