Bilin Žal Beach, Lumbarda – Family Sandy Beach on Korcula Island
Bilin Žal is the quieter alternative to Vela Pržina and the beach that locals with young children tend to prefer. Smaller, more sheltered and facing north-east rather than open sea, it sits on the opposite side of the Lumbarda peninsula from Vela Pržina — about 1.2km from the village centre and 10 minutes on foot. The two beaches are often visited together on the same day, and it is easy to see why: they are close, different in character, and between them cover most of what a family beach day needs.
What Bilin Žal is Like
The beach is about 130 metres long — significantly smaller than Vela Pržina — and made up of soft golden sand with some pebbly patches along the edges. The seabed slopes gently and gradually, with nothing but smooth sand underfoot as you enter the water. No aqua shoes needed, no sudden drops, no rocks to negotiate. For parents with small children this matters considerably — getting in and out of the water is easy, and the shallow zone extends a long way out.
The water itself is clear and calm. Bilin Žal is sheltered from the Maestral and Siloko winds by the orientation of the bay, which means the sea here stays calmer than the south-facing beaches when the afternoon wind picks up. Bura and Levanat do reach it, so a cold winter or early spring day can be dramatic — but in summer it is reliably calm.
Adults wanting to swim rather than paddle will need to go further out — the shallow zone is extensive, which is a feature for children but requires patience if you want depth. Once you get past the shallow section, the water is noticeably cleaner and more transparent.
Facilities at Bilin Žal
The main facility is Konoba Bilin Žal, a small restaurant and café sitting right at the beach — about 40 metres from the waterline. It serves local specialties, fresh seafood, coffee and cold drinks. The atmosphere is casual and family-friendly, popular with both tourists and locals who come for a quick coffee and swim. Sun loungers and parasols are available to hire. Toilets are on site.
A handful of other restaurants and cafes are within easy walking distance back towards Lumbarda village, a short walk away and well regarded for organic dishes and a good wine list. The village centre has a small supermarket and several cafes if you want to stock up before heading to the beach.
Getting to Bilin Žal
The beach is about 6km from Korcula Town and easily reached several ways:
- By bus — the regular Arriva bus service between Korcula Town and Lumbarda stops close to the beach, about 5 minutes walk. Check current timetables at the bus station in Korcula Town or ask at your accommodation. The bus is the easiest option for visitors without a car.
- By car or scooter — follow the road through Lumbarda towards Raznjic. The beach is signed from the road, and access is straightforward — the road drops almost directly to the beach with minimal walking. Wheelchair and pushchair access is good, with just one small step from the road to the beach.
- On foot from Lumbarda — about 10 minutes from the village centre – a pleasant walk through the edge of the Grk vineyards.
- By bike — flat road from Korcula Town takes about 25 minutes. Bike rental is available in Korcula Town.
- By water taxi or boat — accessible from Korcula Town pier, a good option on a calm day.
Bilin Žal vs Vela Pržina — Which to Choose
The two beaches are about 10 minutes’ walk apart, and many visitors do both in a day. But if you have to choose:

- Bilin Žal is better for very young children, calmer conditions, easier access, and a quieter atmosphere. It gets busy but rarely feels as crowded as Vela Pržina at peak times.
- Vela Pržina is better for more facilities, longer stretches of sand, open sea views, activities like jet ski rental and the aquapark, and a livelier atmosphere.
Local families with small children tend to default to Bilin Žal. Visitors wanting more going on tend to prefer Vela Pržina. Both are good — it depends what kind of beach day you want.
Nearby – Lenga Beach
From Bilin Žal, a narrow coastal path leads east towards Lenga — a rocky pebble beach at the foot of the Raznjic peninsula. The walk takes about 15 minutes along the coast and is worth doing if you want somewhere quieter, more natural and with excellent snorkelling around the rocks. Lenga has no facilities so bring water and food. The views back towards the Korcula archipelago and Pelješac are among the best on this stretch of coast.
Bilin Žal in Winter
The beach and coastal path are worth visiting outside the swimming season. In winter, particularly when Bura is blowing, the sea along this stretch of coast becomes rough and dramatic — waves break along the rocks towards Lenga and the views across to Pelješac and the mountains are at their clearest. One of the better winter walks in Lumbarda for anyone staying on the island out of season.
