Samograd
Samograd bay is popular with families and children having an attractive shingle beach with clean and clear waters. Located on the northern coastline of Korcula island, the bay offers uninterrupted sea views of Croatia’s mainland (Biokovo mountain) and Hvar island. In the winter months, the bay is a popular hiker and cycling destination and on a calm day, a great place for fishing & snorkeling. The nearest village is Racisce, nested in the picturesque harbor, which has a local shop, bakery, post office, and a couple of cafes and pizza places.
Beach
Samograd is a north-facing pebble beach about a few hundred meters long, with amazing views over the coastline, popular with locals. It is situated next to the privately owned small olive grove and vineyard. Access to the beach is by foot or bike only, about a hundred meters from car park spaces above the bay. There are no facilities on the beach (kiosk, restaurant, toilets, or similar). Dogs are welcome but should be kept on a leash. The place rarely gets crowded.
Tip: Due to its location and the position of the surrounding hills, the bay gets a lot of shade in the afternoons. So, if you prefer a shady place on a hot summer day, get here and take your patch of the beach on the western side. By 2 pm, this part of the beach will be in the shade (see the second photo at the top of the page)
Where to Eat
There are no restaurants or cafes here, so take your own food and drink or picnic which you can stock in the Racisce village.
Getting here
Located just 3.5 km West of Racisce, the beach is easily accessible by foot. Getting here by scooter or bicycle is a good option. Some cyclists may find it harder at some steeper bits of the country lanes. Driving to the bay by tarmac road and parking here is fairly easy. There are enough parking places along the road, above the bay. Access to the beach from the tarmac road is by bike or walk only.
The local bus can take you to Racisce from Korcula old town. (check what are the options to arrive on the island). The walking distance from the Racisce bus stop to the bay is about 40 minutes (3.5 km). Local speedboat owners in Racisce offer water rides to the bay. If you are not driving, the most comfortable option is to get here by taxi (20 minutes from Korcula Town). The usual charge is about 35 euros (230 HRK) one way for up to 6 people (check here)
Parking
The parking is available about 250 meters from the bay/beach (see below map). Parking is free of charge. In the high season, in July and August parking can get a bit crowded in the afternoons.
