Rasohatica Beach, Korcula – Remote South Coast Bay in the Defora Area
Rasohatica is a remote pebble bay on the southern coast of Korcula, east of Zavalatica and of Pavja Luka, in the broader Defora area between the villages of Žrnovo and Lumbarda. It sits in a sheltered cove surrounded by dense Mediterranean vegetation – pine, maquis and rockrose – with views across the Lastovo channel and the open Adriatic to the south. There is no restaurant, no road to the waterline and almost no development in or around the bay. In peak summer, when Pupnatska Luka and the town beaches are busy, Rasohatica remains genuinely quiet – the combination of difficult access and lack of facilities filters out all but the most determined visitors.
The Beach and Bay
The beach is pebble – white, smooth and comfortable for swimming. The bay is sheltered from the north and north-east winds by the surrounding hills, which keeps the water calm on most summer days. The south-facing aspect means it receives sun throughout the day and the water warms up well in summer. Visibility is consistently good – the clear water typical of this stretch of south coast, which sees very little boat traffic and no development nearby.
The surrounding vegetation comes down almost to the waterline in places, providing natural shade that open south coast beaches rarely offer. The views across the Lastovo channel from the beach are among the best from any south coast bay on the island – Lastovo is visible on the horizon, with the smaller islands of the Lastovo archipelago scattered between. On very clear days in winter, the Italian coast is said to be visible on the horizon.
Robinson-type accommodation is available in the Rasohatica area – private houses offering holiday rentals in an environment with minimal facilities and maximum quiet. Staying in Rasohatica rather than visiting for the day gives you the bay in the early morning and evening when the light is best, and any day visitors have left.
Getting to Rasohatica
Access is by a narrow macadam road from the main island road in the Defora area – some sections are asphalted, others are rough gravel track. A normal car can manage the road with care; a high-clearance vehicle is more comfortable. From the end of the road, a short walk of 15-20 minutes leads down to the bay – partly through pine forest, partly along the coast. The walk is not technical but requires decent footwear, and the return uphill is more demanding than the descent.
There is no public transport to Rasohatica. A car, scooter or hired bicycle from Korcula Town or Žrnovo is the practical option. By boat, the bay is accessible from anywhere on the south coast – a good destination for a day trip by hired motorboat from Korcula Town, combining Rasohatica with Pavja Luka and Orlanduša on the same circuit.
From Žrnovo village, the walking distance to the Defora area bays is about 90 minutes – a worthwhile hike through the island’s interior and then down to the coast. From Lumbarda the distance is similar. Bring water, food and sun protection – there are no facilities in the bay.
Rasohatica and the Defora Area
Rasohatica is one of several bays in the Defora area – a stretch of undeveloped south coast between Žrnovo and Lumbarda that contains some of the most remote and scenic coastline on the island. The neighbouring bays of Pavja Luka, Orlanduša and Bratinja Luka are all within walking distance along the coastal path, and combining two or three bays in a single day – arriving by car to the road end and walking between the bays – is one of the better ways to experience this part of Korcula. The restaurant Šimunovo in the Defora area serves traditional Dalmatian food and is the only food option within a reasonable distance.
