Pavja Luka Beach, Korcula – Secluded South Coast Bay
Pavja Luka is a small, secluded pebble bay on the southern coast of Korcula, about 15 kilometres from Korcula Town in the Defora area near the village of Žrnovo. The bay sits in a sheltered position with views across to the Zaglav peninsula – a narrow headland of dry stone walls and Mediterranean scrub that frames the eastern side of the inlet. The walk to the beach from the road takes about ten minutes downhill through pine forest. A small restaurant operates seasonally in the bay, making Pavja Luka slightly more practical than the completely undeveloped bays nearby while remaining one of the quieter places on the south coast.
The Beach and Bay
The beach is smooth white pebbles in a compact bay sheltered on three sides. The water is calm, clear and very clean – the snorkelling around the rocky edges of the bay is consistently described as good, with sea urchins, fish and the transparent water typical of the undeveloped south coast. The bay faces south-west across open water towards the Lastovo channel, with the distinctive shape of the Zaglav peninsula visible to the east – the dry stone walls that cover the hillside are a remarkable piece of traditional landscape engineering, centuries of accumulated labour in stone that divides the hillside into terraces and encloses the land against the sea wind.
The pine forest behind the beach provides natural shade in the afternoon – welcome on a hot south coast day. The combination of shade, sheltered calm water and good snorkelling makes Pavja Luka one of the more complete beach experiences in the Defora area despite its small size.
The Restaurant
A small seasonal restaurant operates in the bay – the only food option within the immediate area. Traditional Dalmatian food, fresh fish, local wine. The restaurant is not large and can fill up on busy summer days – arriving early or visiting in June or September avoids the worst of the wait. Outside the restaurant’s operating season, bring everything you need. The restaurant Šimunovo in the wider Defora area is another option reachable on foot or by car.
Holiday accommodation is available in and around the bay, with self-catering properties giving you the bay on your doorstep in the morning before day visitors arrive.
Getting to Pavja Luka
By car from Korcula Town, take the main island road towards Žrnovo, then follow the signs into the Defora area on the narrow macadam road south towards the coast. Park at the road end and walk about fifteen minutes downhill to the beach. The road is rough in places – passable by a normal car with care, better by a high-clearance vehicle. From Žrnovo village, the walking distance is about 90 minutes through the interior of the island.
No public transport. By boat, the bay is accessible from anywhere on the south coast – a natural stop on a circuit of the Defora bays by motorboat from Korcula Town. Water shoes are recommended for the rocky sections at the waterline.
